For the nursery, low intensity, indirect red light is the practical and safer choice. What the evidence says and where it is limited Research on light and sleep is strong in adults, and the basic science about blue light suppressing melatonin is well established. A growing number of studies suggest that low wavelength red light, when used in the evening, does not suppress melatonin in the same way and may support sleep onset. Some adult studies report modest improvements in sleep quality and daytime alertness when red light is used instead of blue rich lighting at night. Direct research on infants is much more limited.
